About the Project
The Giza Bridge marks the beginning of the Egyptianization of the bridge industry in Egypt, initiated by Arab Contractors, after it had been the exclusive domain of foreign companies. Owner: Cairo Governorate Implementer: * Arab Contractors Company (Osman Ahmed Osman & Partners) * Strohexport Prague, Czechoslovakia Consultants: Strohexport Prague, Czechoslovakia Start Date: September 1967 Completion Date: January 2, 1971 Project Description: The bridge connects Rawda Island to the Giza area, south of Cairo. Bridge Length: 470 meters Bridge Width: 34.60 meters Foundations: Constructed using compressed air caissons under the Nile bed. Construction Method: * The superstructure is made of prestressed concrete, using 0.7 cm diameter Freyssinet cables. * The superstructure was constructed using the cantilever carriage system. It is the first bridge in Egypt to use this method.
